CHAPTER 13

“WHAT HAPPENED?” ALESSANDRA ASKED the moment she got a look at who was walking through the door.

I rolled into the house after Archer and Cheryl. “It looks like we will have a long-term houseguest.” I cut my gaze to Cheryl to give her a chance to digest that. “Archer, set Cheryl up in the guest room while I talk to your mother.”

Archer opened his mouth and then shut it before he nodded.

I am glad he didn’t argue with me. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with his attitude right now. And I did not want to talk to Alessandra where he could hear. I rolled into my soundproof office. A moment later, she followed and closed the door.

“What happened?”

I rubbed my face. “Her father attacked him. It wasn’t a punch. He shifted and went for Archer’s throat. I had to pull my gun and threaten to shoot his ass if he harmed my son.”

Her mouth dropped open.

“I’m actually glad I can’t shift into a functioning wolf. If I could, her father would have died on the spot.” I met her gaze. “And it is good you weren’t there for the same reason.”

“But what is she doing here?”

“They disowned her and said she’s our problem now.” I shook my head as I tapped my fingers on the arms of the chair. It was my nervous tendency since I couldn’t pace the room. “And apparently, they are getting married this coming weekend.”

Alessandra made a noise like a squeak.

“And he thinks they can stay in the apartment over the garage.”

Her mouth popped closed. “That’s for...”

“No shit. I couldn’t very well say that out loud, either. So, it looks like either we have Robert’s refugees stay in the house with us, or we have Archer and Cheryl in here along with a baby.”

She chewed her bottom lip. “Both have their drawbacks. I’m not all that thrilled about waking throughout the night, but I’d rather have my son under our roof than a stranger.”

I exhaled a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. She nailed my discomfort. Although I had become less wary of the refugees fed through this channel, I still wasn’t comfortable sharing space with them on a regular basis.

“What do we tell Archer?”

“I will talk to him,” Alessandra said. “And don’t worry, I’ll explain that the space over the garage is for traveling dignitaries from other packs and for those in transition who need a roof over their head. It isn’t a big enough space for a child. There isn’t a second bedroom over there. But they can take over the guest room once they are married and we can turn Archer’s room into a nursery.”

I tilted my head at the excitement finding its way into her tone. “Are you going soft on me?”

She laughed. “She’s carrying our grandchild, Jake.”

“I know.” And despite being angry at my son and his hormones, I found myself just as enamored with the idea of a grandchild as my wife.

“We need to make it crystal clear that we” —she pointed between us—“are not raising their children for them.
